I'm not going to get that 240sx.

I think I'll just continue saving (I have 1200 dollars atm). I have class starting next week, and after looking around, if this bent valve is a problem, I'd have to replace the pistons as well (interference engine). If I did get the car, I wouldn't have enough money to swap the engine to an SR either.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, you'll probably see another "should i buy it thread" in 3-4 months. At least now, I know how to replace the valves on my car.

That's a good call. Have cash on hand before you dive in. Doing something like an engine swap is rarely as cheap as people try to make it out to be if you do it the right way. If you buy a car with problems, budget 1.5x the expected cost to repair.

I can tell you that most of the SRs I have seen for lower prices aren't in good condition. People buy them and throw them in cars only to be working on/replacing parts every few months. It cost a a fair bit to get a good one that hadn't been improperly abused or modded stupidly.

If I didn't do an SR (chances are I wouldn't), I wanted to fix up the stock engine, and eventually save, go to a junkyard, and rip out a truck engine from a GM car with a T56 trans. I would have gone all V8 on it.

Why not just buy a V8 car or a different chassis? Unless you are going with a good LS engine and transmission with a decent budget, it's not going to be better than the OEM engine.

Well, under my small budget, I want to learn everything including swapping engines (eventually). I don't like 90's cars which fit my criteria (coupe, manual), with the exception of a 5.0 Foxbody. The 240sx, to me, is something that is flexible, and has a large modding community behind it, so I could go to a forum and ask questions, knowing that someone has done it already.

True. If that's the plan, why not buy a shell without power train and buy the engine an transmission you want? Why start with a complete car?

I still live with my parents. They don't want extra shit around the house, if I can't finish the project. My dad told me he'd allow me to bring home another car, as long as I can get it here under its own power. Not just that, but while I do want to swap, I don't plan to do it immediately. I want to sort of take the existing engine, and maintain it and get it running for as little money as possible. As I feel that my skills can handle a swap, then i'll do it.

Gotcha. Well good luck. There really isn't a whole lot to an engine swap between cars with similar electrical systems and basic components, especially a 240SX that has every mount imaginable already made for it. Just have to be budgeting time and money well so you don't end up like most half finished projects on craigslist ;)

Yeah, that's why I'm holding off on this 240sx. I want enough money, so I don't become another CL listing :(
